Ask a Dentist: Can ClearCorrect Invisible Braces Treat All Bite Problems?

Invisible braces allow patients to get straighter teeth without the discomfort or embarrassment of metal braces. Because dental aligners like ClearCorrect® are transparent and custom-made to accommodate the contours of the teeth, they are practically invisible, hence their name.

Teeth aligners are made of tough plastic that is strong enough to push individual teeth into new, more desirable positions.  This makes appliances like ClearCorrect® capable of fixing different types of orthodontic problems. Many patients want to know: Can ClearCorrect® invisible braces correct all types of dental malocclusions?

How invisible braces work

Invisible braces like ClearCorrect® are custom teeth trays that are nearly identical to the alignment of an individual’s teeth. This allows them to fit snugly over the wearer’s teeth. The slight difference between the teeth trays and the teeth they sit on allows these aligners to exert pressure on targeted teeth.

Just like traditional braces, ClearCorrect® aligners straighten the teeth by applying pressure to individual teeth, gradually moving them into optimal alignment. When one set of teeth aligners reposition the teeth as far as they can, the patient swaps them for the next set in the series. The new pair will have a slightly different alignment than their predecessor. To put it another way, when one set of aligners gets too comfortable, it means that they have done their work and that it is time to switch to a new set.

What can invisible braces treat?

Teeth aligners only treat mild and moderate problems. This includes small gaps, slightly crooked teeth and mild crowding. Patients experiencing a reversal of the results achieved by braces are also good candidates for dental aligners. However, these aligners can only treat orthodontic problems that affect the teeth and not the very structure of the jaw.

When may a dentist recommend alternative treatments?

A person with severely misaligned teeth will likely need more aggressive orthodontic treatment since severe orthodontic problems usually come down to a malformed jaw. Teeth aligners cannot exert the kind of force needed to reshape the jaw or rearrange severe crowding or gapping. They cannot fix severe open bites, crossbites, overbites or underbites. In many cases, not even metallic braces can achieve this feat. In such scenarios, a dentist will create a treatment plan that may involve:

  • Tooth extraction
  • Jaw expanders
  • Corrective jaw surgery, if appliances are not enough
  • In the case of actual missing teeth, dental implant surgery

A person who needs any of the treatments listed here needs the kind of dental intervention that will improve their oral health in addition to the look of their smile. They should be ready to prioritize effective treatment over the temporary aesthetic and comfort of teeth aligners like ClearCorrect®. For the person with severe orthodontic issues, the end result is worth going through traditional treatment options.

Find a treatment plan that will give you a healthy, beautiful smile

Many adults opt out of orthodontic treatment because of the fear of walking around with a metallic smile. It is a good thing that someone came up with the concept of invisible braces. They are a great option for the person with the odd snaggletooth or a small overbite.

That said, anyone who has orthodontic issues that affect their quality of life should consider going the distance to achieve a set of straight teeth. The improvement of their oral health and the look of their smile is worth it. Call us to set up an appointment with our dentist and find out how you can achieve your dream smile.
