What to Expect From Crown Placement for a Dental Restoration

A dental restoration like a crown might be recommended when a filling or composite bonding is not enough to fix a damaged or decayed tooth. It is one of the most popular dental restorations, and it serves cosmetic and therapeutic purposes. Other reasons why a dentist might recommend a crown for your dental restoration include:

  • Preventing a damaged tooth from falling apart and protecting it
  • Anchoring down a dental bridge
  • Hiding a deformed or discolored tooth
  • Serving as an artificial tooth on a dental implant
  • Protecting a tooth that has been treated with a root canal

The process

Getting a dental crown usually requires two trips to the dentist. The procedure does not involve dealing with pain since a local anesthetic is administered at the start.

During the first appointment, the dentist will evaluate the patient’s tooth and prepare it for a crown. They might use diagnostics like X-rays to view the inner layers of the tooth and the bone anchoring it down. Crowns are typically recommended when a tooth has been severely damaged, so the dentist might need to perform a treatment like a root canal before placing a crown on the tooth.

The patient’s tooth is prepared for the crown by shaving enamel off its sides. This creates a tighter fit with the crown. When the dentist is done preparing the patient’s tooth, an impression of it will be taken by having the patient bite down on the mold. The impression is forwarded to technicians in a lab that makes crowns. It should get back to the dentist within a couple of weeks. The patient gets a temporary crown to protect the prepared tooth while they wait for their custom crown.

The temporary crown is removed during the second appointment and the patient’s custom crown is cemented into place. The dentist will make any alterations as needed before sending the patient off. A local anesthetic is typically used during the second appointment as well, so the patient does not feel any pain.

Recovery

There is no real recovery after getting a crown, but some patients experience increased teeth sensitivity that lasts a few days. The patient might also have some inflammation and irritation as a result of the procedure.

It takes about 48 hours for the dental cement used to fully set so patients should avoid doing things that can lead to the crown coming off or being dislodged. Hard foods like ice should be avoided as well as chewy or sticky foods. Stick to mostly soft foods for the first couple of days after getting a crown. People with crowns should still avoid hard foods after the cement has set since crowns are not as durable as real teeth.
